Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld is open to rejoining Dutch giants Ajax in the future. The Belgian joined Atletico Madrid from Ajax before moving to Southampton on loan in the 2014-15 season.
The centre-back signed for Tottenham at the start of the 2015-16 season and has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League.
Alderweireld was speaking to De Telegraaf (h/t Sky Sports) and wasn’t turning down a chance to rejoin the Dutch giants.
“Never say never.
“At this moment in my career I don’t think about that yet. I think I can go on for years at this level. If I ever did, it is not to take it easy.”
The defender claimed that he would join the side only if he could perform for the team.
“I do not want to be 36-years-old and can hardly walk. When I return, I certainly want to leave something. And not only in the dressing room.
“Of course it is close to home in Belgium and I have a bond with the club, because I played football at Ajax for eight years. Achieving championships, the third star, experience.”
Alderweireld is a free agent at the end of the season. However, Tottenham can exercise a one-year extension on his current deal, which includes a £25m (h/t Sky Sports) release clause.
We must do everything we can to keep him at Tottenham for long as he is getting better with each season under his belt.

The defender is a crucial member of Mauricio Pochettino’s side and should lead the defence until Jan Vertonghen returns from an injury.
