Pep Guardiola claimed that the condition of Wembley pitch was the reason why Erik Lamela could not score for Tottenham.
Guardiola’s Manchester City had taken an early lead via Riyad Mahrez, but Lamela had the chance to score for Tottenham late on.
The ball seemed to take a bit of a bobble before the Argentine could striker, and the Spanish manager was quoted by the Independent as saying:
“Lamela had a clear chance and due to the grass they did not score.
“If the grass is good, Lamela with his quality in his left foot is in a better position to score a goal.”
The pitch was in a poor condition due to an NFL game on Sunday. There were markings left from the clash, and a huge NFL logo was at the centre of the surface.
Guardiola congratulated both sides for playing on a difficult surface and claimed there were mistakes taking place which normally wouldn’t happen.
“To play a football game in that pitch is not easy. That’s why there were many mistakes that usually should not happen…”
Spurs did have a couple of chances with Harry Kane running through on goal but Ederson made a wonderful tackle.
The pitch certainly needed a lot of work after the Sunday NFL game, and who knows if we could have played well on a better surface.
Tottenham’s next game is in the Carabao Cup against West Ham, and it will be interesting to see how we bounce back after the loss to the Cityzens.
