Toby Alderweireld was upset over Belgium not making it into the last four of the UEFA Nations League.
The third-placed team from the World Cup were comprehensively beaten 5-2 by Switzerland as they booked a place ahead of the Belgians.
Speaking to HLN (h/t Football.london), the Tottenham defender was upset over the mistakes made in the game.
“I have no words for this.
“We made too many individual mistakes.
“We were 0-2, then you always have to play that game. But then we gave away a stupid penalty.”
Belgium were winning the tie 2-0 thanks to a pair of goals from Thorgan Hazard but Ricardo Rodriguez scored a penalty and the Swiss never looked back.
Alderweireld continued:
“That equaliser was also stupid. Suddenly the Swiss began to believe in it again.
“All those individual mistakes. Normally this never happens to us.
“We perform very consistently, but today we fell through completely. An off day.”
The loss certainly would hurt the Belgian side as they could have certainly gone all the way to win the first Nations League.
It will be important for Alderweireld to forget about Belgium and channel the defeat for his club. Tottenham have some really tough games coming up after the international break, and we would require all the players to be focused on the job ahead.
Our first test is against Chelsea at the weekend before we face Inter Milan in a do or die Champions League tie.
