Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has claimed that Tottenham were in for Reds pair Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum but weren’t willing to splash the cash.

The Sky Sports pundit wrote in his column for the Telegraph (h/t Express) and added that Harry Maguire and Jack Grealish were also targets for Spurs but the deals fell through.

“Players they could have signed by spending more – like Sadio Mane, Gini Wijnaldum, Harry Maguire and Jack Grealish – did not arrive.

“This was not because they were overpriced or Spurs could not afford them.

“Chairman Daniel Levy relishes his reputation as the Premier League’s toughest negotiator, which is sometimes enhanced by pulling out of deals as much as completing them.”

Spurs became the first time not to spend in the summer window, and it was a bit of a surprise that we didn’t add any players to the side.

Mane has been one of the best signings made by the Reds under Jurgen Klopp while Wijnaldum has been excellent this season.

Even without the signings, Tottenham have done alright this season. We are only five points behind the league leaders Manchester City, but we need to invest in the side if we are to push on from just a top-four spot.

Levy does like a bargain or two in the market, and it will be interesting to see what is our activity when the winter window opens.
