Tottenham were willing to part with Toby Alderweireld in the summer for £30m, according to Phil Brown from the Beyond the Pitch podcast (h/t Express).

The Belgian now has less than one year left on his contract, and the report claims that Manchester United were interested in the 29-year-old. Tottenham told United that an offer of £30m (h/t Express) would have been enough to get the player over.

Brown told that United didn’t accept the offer and said they would come back in the next summer (h/t Express):

“What’s the point of 56 scouts if Ed Woodward’s going to turn around and say ‘nah, I think he’s better so we’re going to keep Smalling and not sign Alderweireld’.

“Alderweireld was offered to United for £30m and they still said ‘nah, we’ll come back for you next season’. I don’t understand that.”

The report adds that Spurs have an option to activate a one-year extension on Alderweireld’s current deal, however, the defender could then leave £25million in the next summer window.

The Belgian is one of the best defenders in the Premier League, and we still have not been able to extend his stay on a long-term deal.

Alderweireld has formed a great partnership with Jan Vertonghen, and we need him to keep performing this season.

The 29-year-old could get better in the coming years and letting him leave would be a huge mistake from the club.
