Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has expressed his happiness at staying at the club for another season and is only thinking about football.
Spurs executed a clause in the Belgian’s contract and extended his stay till 2020. However, a release clause of £25m was also activated which comes into effect in the summer window, according to the Guardian.
The 29-year-old rejected a long-term deal with Tottenham last season (h/t Guardian) and seems set to leave at the end of the season.
Alderweireld’s future remains a mystery but the Belgian was at his best in our 1-0 win over Chelsea in the first leg of our Carabao Cup semi-final.
The Belgian spoke about his situation at Spurs and claimed he wanted to give 100% to the club (h/t Guardian):
“I’m very happy to stay another year.
“It was [a clause] in my contract and I’m happy Spurs gave me the confidence to stay another year. I’m only focused on things on the pitch. People can see every time I play that I give 100% for this club – this is what I keep doing every time I play.”
Toby is one of the best defenders in the Premier League and has formed a fantastic partnership alongside Jan Vertonghen.
The Belgian has also been one of our most consistent players this season and losing him to a Premier League rival would be a big blow.
It will be difficult to find a replacement for the 29-year-old. However, Spurs have a couple of quality young defenders coming through in Juan Foyth and Davinson Sanchez.
The pair has done well for us this season and they do have the potential to become great defenders in the coming years.
