Jan Vertonghen believes this Tottenham team deserves a trophy and lamented their lack of luck in chasing silverware. Spurs were knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the semi-final stage after losing to Chelsea on penalties. The loss certainly was hard to take given we came into the tie with a 1-0 lead from the first leg.
Tottenham haven’t made a lot of finals under Mauricio Pochettino, however, the team has become one of the best in the Premier League.
The Belgian defender wanted the side to win something, but knew there is a lot of competition for the top prizes (h/t Mirror):
“This team deserves so much more, but there are so many teams competing for a rare prize. Over the last five years, we haven’t had a lot of luck. It would be a big shame if we don’t reward ourselves, because this team and everyone in the club deserves that reward. It would be good to win something.”
Tottenham won’t have it easy winning a trophy this season with Dele Alli and Harry Kane out till March. The Englishmen are world-class stars, and not having them in this period is a big blow to Spurs.
Pochettino’s men face Borussia Dortmund over two legs in the Champions League round of 16, and it will be interesting to see how we perform against the Bundesliga leaders. Tottenham also have an outside chance of winning the Premier League despite the FA Cup disappointment.
Hopefully, we end the season on a high with a trophy to show for.
