Tottenham scored another late goal in the Premier League to pick up a win over Newcastle United. The moment came in the 83rd minute as Son Heung-min lashed in from outside the box, and provided Spurs with a huge boost for the remainder of the campaign.

For most of the afternoon, it seemed like Newcastle would hold on for the point after their shock win over Manchester City in the midweek. Spurs had their chances, with Lucas Moura and Fernando Llorente missing gilt-edged opportunities, but Son came up with the magic late in the second half. Newcastle had their chances too but Spurs just about held on for a crucial win.

The win puts us second on the table, one point ahead of Manchester City, and we are firmly in the race for the title. Liverpool and City need to watch their backs as we seem to have resilience in the team, and there were some quality performances at Wembley.

Tottenham Player Ratings

Lloris didn’t have much to do in the first half but made some important saves in the second to keep a clean sheet.

Jan Vertonghen – 7.5/10

The Belgian did a decent job as the left-back and was later played in a back-three to keep things tight.

Davinson Sanchez – 7/10

The Colombian had a chance to score early on but missed his header. He did a great job in keeping Salomon Rondon fairly quiet.

Toby Alderweireld – 7.5/10

Another quality outing from the Belgian as he ensured Newcastle couldn’t do much when they tried to attack him.

Kieran Trippier – 6.5/10

The Englishman started well but his crossing wasn’t great throughout the game.

Another industrious display from the Englishman as he ran his socks off and tried to get the team going.

Moussa Sissoko – 7.5/10

The Frenchman had a great chance to score but was denied by a great save from the Newcastle keeper. The midfielder had another decent outing for Tottenham.

Son Heung-min – 8/10

Son started brightly but faded in and out of the game. His strike wasn’t great as the Newcastle keeper should have done better, but it is an important goal.

Christian Eriksen – 7/10

Eriksen’s set-pieces weren’t great but he could have scored a couple had it not been for some last-ditch defending from Newcastle.

Lucas Moura – 5.5/10

Moura struggled up front and missed a glorious chance early on. He was replaced after an hour as Spurs looked to win the game.

Erik Lamela – 6/10

Lamela hit the crossbar with a header and had a great first half. He fizzled out in the second and was replaced later on.
