Latest Tottenham news: Mousa Dembele explains reasons for joining Guangzhou R&F
Mousa Dembele left Tottenham for Chinese Super League side Guangzhou R&F in the winter window.
The 31-year-old played close to 250 times for Tottenham and was sold by Spurs for £11m, as his contract was up in the summer (h/t Sky Sports).
The Belgian was one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, but he had his fair share of injury problems. However, the midfielder claimed he was “open-minded” and wanted to try something different. When asked why he left Spurs, he said (h/t Sky Sports):
“I like to see myself as open-minded. That is one of the reasons I wanted to come to China. I wanted to see something different.”
The Belgian added that he believes there is good food in the city and that his family was also enjoying there.
A Tottenham kind of feeling
The Belgian added that he is trying to learn the language and has an app that helps him. Dembele added that everyone is welcoming at the club and that it is important to feel comfortable right from the start.
The 31-year-old claimed that the atmosphere at the club is similar to that of Tottenham:
“The jokes and everything is similar to Tottenham. The group atmosphere is very comparable with Tottenham. I like this because in Tottenham it was a good group, everyone was very good together.”

The Belgian further said that the players at the Chinese club have a good mentality. Dembele is yet to make an appearance for his new club, however, he should thrive in the less robust Chinese Super League.
