Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld gives an emotional message to all supporters.

Latest Tottenham news: Toby Alderweireld likes fan tweet questioning Tottenham future

Toby Alderweireld is one of the best defenders in the Premier League. The Belgian has formed a great partnership alongside Jan Vertonghen and had a decent game in the 1-1 draw against Arsenal.

The former Ajax and Atletico Madrid defender tweeted his disappointment at not winning the game and thanked the fans for wishing him on his birthday.

The Belgian defender liked a tweet from a Tottenham correspondent, which spoke about his time at the club.

Ricky Sacks wanted the Belgian to stay at the club and win trophies but added that this could have been his last North London derby for Spurs.

Alderweireld’s future up in the air

The 30-year-old is contracted to Tottenham until 2020 but has a £25million release clause, which would be activated in the summer (h/t Telegraph).

The Belgian has been unable to finalise terms over a new deal and Tottenham extended his contract by a year, according to the report.

Spurs have also taken up the same option with Jan Vertonghen, according to the Telegraph and it would be a major blow if we were to lose out on either of them due to contract issues.

It is a surprise that we haven’t been able to lock down Alderweireld to a new deal given how important he is to the team. The Belgian would walk into the starting XI of most teams in the world and could get better in the coming seasons.

Tottenham have a couple of young defenders in Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth. However, they can’t consistently perform at the levels that Alderweireld has, which has been seen this season.
