Spurs opinion: Mauricio Pochettino can rebuild the team after a fire sale in the summer
Tottenham could be in for several changes to their playing staff, according to Guardian journalist David Hytner.
The club are set to sell or lose several players, some of whom are first-teamers. The report suggests that Fernando Llorente and Michel Vorm will leave on a free while Victor Wanyama, Georges-Kevin Nkoudou and Vincent Janssen are the others to be included on the transfer list.
Vorm and Llorente have played their parts for Tottenham over the past two seasons or so, however, should the quintet be sold, Mauricio Pochettino would have the chance to build on the current side.
A chance to sign players that can grow with the system
The report from Hytner suggests that Tottenham will sign players should the five be shipped out due to a relatively thin squad.
There could be some high profile exits too with Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld rumoured to be close to leaving the club (h/t Guardian).
However, this shouldn’t be seen as all doom and gloom for the club. Getting rid of some of the deadwood will give Daniel Levy and Pochettino the chance to work on getting the right players into the club again.
Tottenham have been linked with several U23 stars such as Jarrod Bowen, Jack Grealish, David Brooks and Max Aarons (h/t Guardian).
Most of the players linked with Spurs actually solve a problem area for us. Grealish can help out in the midfield, Bowen and Brooks in the attack while Aarons and Kieran Tierney (h/t Guardian) can solve our problems at the full-back positions.
The players also know about English football, at least most of them, and it should not take them a long time to get accustomed to the Premier League.
Of course, signing a raft of players and expecting results straight away would be difficult. Tottenham have been burnt along those lines when we splashed the Gareth Bale money on players that just did not cut it.
That has to be avoided at all circumstances, and we need to be careful with the spending in the summer. Tottenham’s finances will be crunched due to our move into the new stadium.
Pochettino has been excellent when working with young players during his time in England. Should he get hold of the right ones, we could see a similar story to his Southampton team taking the league by storm.
