Spurs news: Jan Vertonghen shares his thoughts on VAR and the Danny Rose penalty incident
Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen shared his thoughts on the controversial penalty awarded to Manchester City in the Champions League.
Danny Rose was adjudged to have handled the ball in the penalty box after the referee consulted with VAR.
No one appealed or expected the penalty but Hugo Lloris came up big by saving Sergio Aguero’s effort.
Vertonghen conceded that the penalty was “weird” but was in favour of the technology (h/t Telegraph):
“No one expected it.
“They did not even appeal for it so it was extremely weird to concede a penalty like this. That’s VAR. I’m not always a fan but at the end everyone will benefit from it.”
Vertonghen speaks about changing defending style
The Belgian added that he would have been happy to receive a penalty as City did. The centre-back added that everything looks like a pen now and he might have to change the way he defends:
“I think so many things look like a penalty in slow motion. The PSG-United game, everything looks like a penalty now. I think we have to change the way we defend.”
Vertonghen even believed that there could be up to 40 more penalties per season in the Premier League thanks to VAR.
Tottenham were on the wrong end of the decision yesterday but that didn’t stop the team from getting the win.
Lloris saved the penalty and Son Heung-min beat Ederson for the only goal of the game.
