Spurs news: Paul Merson makes bold Champions League claim
Tottenham can go all the way to the Champions League final after they beat Manchester City on Wednesday night.
This is the opinion of Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson, who thinks the north Londoners will be ‘too strong’ for the exciting but relatively inexperienced Ajax team. (h/t The Metro)
We advanced to the Champions League semi-final after coming through a thrilling second leg at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night. Taking a 1-0 first leg lead to Manchester, Spurs lost 4-3 to Pep Guardiola’s men but made it to the last four on the away goals rule.
After beating City, Mauricio Pochettino’s men will now face Ajax in the semi-final after the Eredivisie heavyweights stunned Juventus 3-2 on aggregate.
And Merson now claims that Tottenham will get past Ajax and into the Champions League finale.
“To go to Manchester City and beat them… everybody in Europe will be looking at this result. Everybody will be going: “wow!”, Merson told Sky Sports’ The Debate. (h/t The Metro)
“And to show the bottle to have a go. Second half they were pinned back but they kept on going.
“Don’t take anything away from Tottenham, this is a phenomenal football result. They have every chance of being in the final.
“Ajax are good but if Tottenham play like they can and to their best ability they will be too strong for Ajax.”
He added: “It will be a good game… but don’t open the game up, Tottenham. They will rip you to shreds.
“But I just think Tottenham will be too strong. Defensively they’re very good and I think Tottenham will get to the final, I really do.”
The confidence Tottenham have got after eliminating City from the Champions League is immense. But we face Ajax in the semi-finals and simply cannot take them lightly.
The Dutch giants are a really thrilling side that plays a quick, possession-based football. They have knocked two big fishes in Real Madrid and Juventus out of the competition which tells one the threat they carry.
