Latest Spurs news: Donny van de Beek claims Tottenham are favourites ahead of Ajax clash
Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek believes that Tottenham are the favourites ahead of the Champions League clash in midweek.
The Dutch star was speaking to VTBL and rejected claims that Ajax would be favourites going into the two-legged affair.
Ajax have defeated Real Madrid and Juventus in successive rounds, however, Van de Beek was not going to take Spurs lightly (h/t Evening Standard):
“I don’t agree with that. Tottenham is one of the top teams in the Premier League and they are still my favourite.”
The midfielder was quick to add that the Dutch giants have to be at their best to beat Spurs:
“That does not mean that we cannot beat them. We will have to reach a high level to beat Tottenham. It will depend on our own form. let’s hope it is top.”
Mind games ahead of the clash?
It is surprising for a player to openly state that the opposition are favourites for the clash.
This could be a ploy to put Tottenham in a difficult position, however, Mauricio Pochettino will know all about the Dutch giants ahead of the two games.
Tottenham didn’t have an easy ride to the semi-finals with wins over Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City in the knockout rounds.
Ajax have several stars who could damage us and Spurs will be without Son Heung-min for the first leg due to a suspension.
