Latest Spurs news: Harry Winks undergoes groin surgery on eve of Champions League clash

Tottenham were dealt another injury blow as midfielder Harry Winks underwent groin surgery just one day before the Champions League semi-final clash against Ajax.

The midfielder has struggled for fitness this season and last played for Spurs in the 1-0 win over Manchester City in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.

Winks is the second major player to be ruled out for a while as Harry Kane is recovering from ankle ligament damage.

Winks hopes to return before season ends

The English midfielder posted an emotional message about missing games at such a crucial point in the campaign.

However, Winks was hopeful of returning to action before the end of the season.

The last Premier League game for Spurs is against Everton on 12 May, and should we reach the Champions League final, then our final game of the season would be on 1 June.

Winks could be targetting that game but Spurs have to overcome the surprise package of this Champions League season.

Ajax have done extremely well to beat Juventus and Real Madrid in the knockout rounds and we have to wary of the threat they possess.

Spurs will also be without Son Heung-min for the first leg of the semi due to suspension.

Winks could have played an important role in the semis had he been fit, but we have to plan without him.

Several Tottenham fans were gutted after learning about his surgery but backed the Englishman to return stronger than ever.
