Latest Spurs news: Jan Vertonghen provides an update on foot injury after Ajax game
Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen left Amsterdam with a protective cast on his foot.
The Belgian played the entire game as Spurs defeated Ajax on away goals to reach the Champions League final.
There wasn’t any flashpoint which suggested that Vertonghen had picked up a knock, and the Belgian spoke about his injury on Dutch TV show Van Gils and Gasten (h/t Metro):
“My ankle is swollen. I played the second half on adrenaline. I couldn’t put weight on my foot after the game.”
The 32-year-old has been excellent at the back for us this season and was hopeful of returning for the final on 1 June.
“The first tests were positive, but I will know soon if I‘ll make the final. I’m hopeful.”
Tottenham need to start with Toby Alderweireld partnering Vertonghen at the back. The pair have an excellent understanding and need to be at their best to keep Liverpool from scoring in the final.
Spurs have other injury concerns
Harry Kane was part of the team that travelled to the Netherlands, and the Englishman is recuperating from ankle ligament damage.
The England captain is in a race against time to be fit for the final while Harry Winks recently underwent groin surgery, as he took targets a return in June.
