Spurs transfer news: Arsenal enter race to sign Ajax star Donny van de Beek
The Times (h/t Football.london) reports that Tottenham have to battle Arsenal for Donny van de Beek of Ajax. The Dutch midfielder impressed this season and led Ajax to the Champions League semi-finals.
Van de Beek scored in the 1-0 win for the Dutch side against Spurs in the semi-final first leg. However, Tottenham defeated Ajax 3-2 in Amsterdam to make it to the finals.
Ajax also won the Eredivisie title, with Van de Beek scoring 9 goals and providing 10 assists in the league campaign. The 22-year-old chipped with 16 goals and 12 assists in all competitions for the Dutch side.
The report claims that Spurs were planning a £45m bid for the midfielder, but the player’s stock has risen, thanks to the Champions League performance by Ajax.
Van de Beek will only move to a big club
The report quotes Van de Beek’s father saying that the 22-year-old wants to win more trophies at Ajax and only a good club could tempt him to leave the Dutch giants.
Arsenal are hopeful of landing the midfielder, according to the report, however, we have the Champions League on our side. The Gunners were beaten 4-1 by Chelsea in the final of the Europa League, and Unai Emery’s side will have to play in that competition next season.
Spurs need to sign a quality midfielder after letting Mousa Dembele leave in the winter window.
