Spurs transfer news: Roma offer Alderweireld €3.5m-per-year but want Tottenham to reduce price-tag

Toby Alderweireld has been offered a contract worth €3.5m-per-season plus bonuses by AS Roma, according to Calciomercato.

The 30-year-old Belgian has a release clause of €25m and is out of a contract at the end of next season (h/t Calciomercato).

The defender’s agent also met with AS Roma’s sporting director on Thursday, but the Serie A giants are not willing to meet the release clause (h/t Calciomercato).

The report adds that Roma want to reduce the clause by €7m-€8m, and the club’s sporting director, Gianluca Petrachi, is a huge admirer of Alderweireld.

The Belgian has not been able to finalise a new deal with Tottenham, and he could leave on a free at the end of the next season.

The report adds that Alderweireld has been linked with Manchester United, Juventus and Arsenal all throughout the year, but it seems that Roma have accelerated their chase for the former Southampton defender.

Is Roma a good fit for Alderweireld?

Alderweireld is still one of the best defenders in the Premier League and moving to Roma does have its pitfalls.

The Italians will not be playing in the Champions League next season after a poor Serie A campaign, while Tottenham will be participating in the tournament.

The Romans are also rebuilding their team after selling Kostas Manolas to Napoli.

Alderweireld could do a great job in most of the top teams in the world, and it will be interesting to see if Tottenham allow the Belgian to leave for lower than the €25m release clause.

Daniel Levy is a tough negotiator and would want maximum value for the 30-year-old Alderweireld.
