Spurs transfer news: AS Roma to meet Toby Alderweireld’s agents on Thursday
Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio provided an update on AS Roma’s chase of Toby Alderweireld.
The Belgian defender is a free agent at the end of next season, and the Italian claims that Alderweireld has a £25million release clause in his Tottenham contract.
Alderweireld was one of the most consistent players for us last season, however, Di Marzio claims that Roma will meet with the Belgian’s agents today.
The report adds that Roma
Roma’s sporting director, Gianluca Petrachi, will meet with Alderweireld’s agents to agree on a deal, even though the Belgian’s wage demands will be significant, according to the report.
The 30-year-old is one of the best defenders in the world but Spurs have not been able to finalise a new deal with the former Southampton star.
Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez had their injury problems last season while Juan Foyth still seems a little raw at the moment.
Spurs have to take a big call on Toby
Losing Alderweireld would certainly affect our defence negatively, however, it is better to get £25million for him than getting nothing at all.
Further, selling him off to a non-Premier League club would be the best outcome as it would not strengthen a direct rival.

Roma will not be playing in the Champions League next season, and it will be interesting to see if they can land Alderweireld in the summer.
