Spurs transfer news: Arsenal match Tottenham’s bid for William Saliba

RMC Sport (h/t Football.london) reports that Arsenal have matched Tottenham’s bid for Saint Etienne defender William Saliba.

The report claims that the Ligue 1 side want €30m for the 18-year-old defender and take him back on loan for the upcoming season.

Arsenal were in the chase for the young defender but Tottenham made a better offer, which was worth €30m and other bonuses, according to the report.

However, Arsenal have now matched this offer, and the report claims that the Ligue 1 club will take some time off regarding the bids.

St Etienne want to check which club Saliba wants to join and also if they can push the price up (h/t Football.london).

Tottenham can use a versatile defender in the team

Saliba has played a few games as a right-back and this sort of versatility would be used well by Mauricio Pochettino.

The 18-year-old will improve in the coming years and it will be interesting to see where he ends up next season.

Kyle Walker-Peters

Sending him back on loan wouldn’t really help us much given that we need some cover for our defenders.

Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier didn’t have great seasons last time around, while Kyle Walker-Peters still needs to improve further.

Arsenal don’t have the lure of the Champions League either, and we have already spent big in the transfer market by landing Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele.
