Spurs transfer news: Tottenham to increase Alderweireld’s price to £40m
Daniel Levy is set to increase the selling price of Toby Alderweireld, according to the Telegraph.
The Belgian is out of a contract at the end of next season and has a release clause of £25m, which expires on Friday (h/t Telegraph).
Levy is a tough negotiator and the report claims that he will not sell the Belgian for less than £40m if the defender’s release clause is not activated by Friday.
Alderweireld is one of the best defenders in the Premier League and has been linked with Manchester United (h/t Telegraph).
AS Roma are also keen on the defender, however, they cannot afford his wages or the fee that Tottenham want, according to the report.
The 30-year-old is currently with Tottenham for the pre-season Asia tour and was named as the captain in our win over Juventus.
United keeping their options open
United are also interested in Harry Maguire but have made Alderweireld their back-up should they fail to land the Leicester City star (h/t Telegraph).
Maguire was one of the most impressive defenders from outside the top six clubs last season and is now a regular for England too.
Alderweireld staying with Spurs would be great and selling him to a rival would be the worst possible outcome from this saga.

The 30-year-old still has a couple of quality years left in him and hopefully, those come in the white of Tottenham.
