Spurs transfer news: Alderweireld’s £25million release clause expires
The Evening Standard reports that Toby Alderweireld’s £25million release clause has expired, with just two weeks left in the transfer window.
The 30-
The report claims that Alderweireld seemed destined to leave the club a year ago, but Spurs took up the option of a one-year contract extension that featured a release clause.
The release clause allowed the Belgian to leave for £25m and it ran until the last two weeks of this transfer window (h/t Evening Standard).
The report adds that Alderweireld could leave for a much larger fee should Daniel Levy decide to sell but the Belgian was adamant that he was concentrating on the season ahead with Tottenham (h/t Evening Standard):
“Do I think I will still be a Spurs player come the start of the season?
“Yes — that’s my focus. In football everything can go quickly but all I’m doing is focusing on Spurs and being fit for the start of the season.”
Some good news for Tottenham
Tottenham can now demand a higher price for Alderweireld, but they can also keep hold of the Belgian until next season.
This can give us time to possibly thrash out a new deal with one of the best defenders in the Premier League, and it will be interesting to see how things develop in the coming weeks.
The 30-year-old was one of the most consistent players in the team last season and helped us reach the Champions League final.
