Spurs transfer news: Van der Vaart believes Vertonghen might want to leave Tottenham
Jan Vertonghen was one of the surprise omissions from the squad that faced Aston Villa.
The Belgian was seen in the stands with injured stars Dele Alli and Ryan Sessegnon.
Mauricio Pochettino was asked about the Belgian’s exit, and the manager claimed that only hard
“My decision today was to play Toby. If the players didn’t play today, they need to work hard to get their opportunity.”
However, former Tottenham star Rafael van der Vaart claims something else could have happened.
The defender is out of a contract at the end of the season, and Van der Vaart was quoted as saying (h/t Football.london):
“It was strange that he was not in the squad. Maybe something happens and he said he wants to go.
“When he’s fit, he’s a hundred percent a starting player.”
A surprising decision by Pochettino
Vertonghen is one of the best in the Premier League and leaving him out of the squad was a bit of a surprise.
The pairing of Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez did a decent job against Villa, however, we have to keep Vertonghen at all costs.
The Belgian can also play as a left-back and did really well in that position last season. The only issue with Vertonghen is his age, however, he still has a couple of quality years left in him.

Tottenham cannot buy any players until the winter window and selling Vertonghen now would limit our options at the back.
