Spurs transfer news: Tottenham fear Alderweireld will leave on a free next summer
The Mirror reports that Tottenham
The Belgian has just one year left on his current deal and was available for £25million (h/t Mirror) this summer.
However, that release clause expired two weeks before the transfer deadline and no serious bid came for the 30-year-old, according to the report.
Alderweireld is looking to run down his contract and can discuss terms with foreign clubs in January (h/t Mirror).
This would see Tottenham lose out on a decent sum and the Belgian can leave for nothing.
However, AS Roma were interested in Alderweireld but were unwilling to meet the £25m transfer fee. The Serie A giants are unlikely to submit an acceptable offer before the European transfer window ends (h/t Mirror).
Alderweireld started in our 3-1 win over Aston Villa on the opening day of the Premier League season, and the Belgian was one of our most consistent players last campaign.
The 30-year-old was one of the few players not to suffer injury issues and it will be interesting to see what we do with the Belgian in the coming months.
Spurs can still sell in January
Alderweireld could leave in the January window too

The Belgian is one of the best in the league and losing him this summer would be a blow for us. Spurs cannot buy any players until the winter window but can sell to foreign clubs till 2nd September.
