Spurs transfer news: Gold claims Vertonghen is most likely to sign new deal with Tottenham

Tottenham have placed themselves in a tough position as three stars are out of contracts at the end of the season.

Christian Eriksen, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen can leave for nothing next summer, and Football.london’s Alasdair Gold was asked how Tottenham could have allowed such a situation to arise.

The Tottenham correspondent highlighted that the players could not leave due to a lack of interest in them and even claimed Alderweireld’s release clause was “peanuts” (h/t Football.london):

“Much of it comes from a surprising lack of interest in the players from outside meaning they never had suitable bids for their services.

“Would anyone have thought that not one club would have been interested in signing Toby Alderweireld for £25m this summer. It’s peanuts for a top class defender.”

Gold added that it is difficult to force someone to sign a new deal but Spurs have managed to put themselves in a difficult situation. However, he claimed Vertonghen could sign a new deal to stay at the club:

“Personally I still feel, despite his recent absence from the team, that Vertonghen is one of the trio most likely to sign a new deal. He seems to be the one who really would like to stay.”

Vertonghen not featuring for the side

The centre-back is yet to play for us this season and has been left out of both our Premier League games so far.

The 32-year-old is one of the best in the Premier League and losing both Alderweireld and Vertonghen in the summer would be a major blow.

The European transfer window is open until 2nd September and hopefully, we don’t lose any important players during this period.

Spurs have to keep a settled squad for the remainder of the campaign and have started well with a win over Aston Villa and a fighting draw against Manchester City.
