Latest Spurs news: Pochettino provides cryptic response when asked about Vertonghen
Jan Vertonghen hasn’t featured in any of our games this season with the Belgian sitting on the bench in the 2-2 draw with Manchester City.
The 32-year-old was left out of the squad against Aston Villa on
Spurs have four points from two games and the next test is against Newcastle United on Sunday.
Mauricio Pochettino was asked if Vertonghen needed games to be fit, but the Argentine gave a cryptic response regarding the Belgian (h/t Football.london):
“I am only going to decide to try and provide the best players that are in my head to play. If I don’t play for someone it is because I believe there is another in my opinion that is better. This is very clear.”
Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld have done a decent job so far this season, but the pair were stretched in the clash against City.
Spurs need the experience of Vertonghen
The Belgian is one of the best in the Premier League and we need his experience against some of the better sides.
Sanchez is quicker than Alderweireld and Vertonghen, and that could have been one reason to play the Colombian against City.
Vertonghen is also out of a contract at the end of the season, and it is to be seen if he is offered a new deal by Spurs.
