Latest Spurs news: Pochettino claims Tottenham isn’t a ‘charity’ when asked about Wanyama’s future
Mauricio Pochettino didn’t mince his words when he was asked about Victor Wanyama.
The former Southampton midfielder has struggled with injuries over the past two seasons and has been linked with a move this summer (h/t Mirror).
Tottenham also signed Tanguy Ndombele in the summer and the Frenchman has started his Spurs career in impressive fashion.
The midfielder has slotted into the first-team and scored on his home debut against Aston Villa.
Pochettino was speaking before the Newcastle game and claimed there was no room for emotion in football (h/t Mirror):
“It’s all about performance. Football is for today and tomorrow, not yesterday. You need always to show that you are there and deserve (to be there).
“In the case of Victor, he suffered an injury and another player stepped up and took his place. We are in a team, we are not a charity.”
The Argentine then clarified that the comments weren’t just directed at Wanyama and the players had to prove their ability on the pitch.
“I am making clear the answer is not about Victor, but we are not a charity – it is about performance and the coaching staff have a lot of different options to play different players.”
Wanyama didn’t progress at Spurs
Pochettino added that Wanyama didn’t progress at Spurs despite being a good player, and the manager added that this was normal at all football clubs.
“I am the coach, I need to take the decision and hope it will be right. Victor is a very important player and, for different circumstances, went backwards.”
Keeping an injury-prone Wanyama doesn’t really make sense given the options we have at the moment.
Ndombele looks to be an exciting player with a great future while Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko look to kick-on from the previous campaign.
