Latest Spurs news: Tottenham crash to 1-0 home defeat against Newcastle

Tottenham’s unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign didn’t last long as they were beaten 1-0 at home by Newcastle.

Spurs were coming off a great 2-2 draw at the Etihad last weekend and were favourites to pick up three points against Steve Bruce’s side.

Son Heung-min got his first start of the season after returning from a suspension and played alongside Erik Lamela, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane.

Even without Christian Eriksen in the starting XI, that should have been enough to get the win, but Newcastle’s Joelinton scored in the 27th minute after breaking free from Davinson Sanchez.

Sanchez and Danny Rose had a tough evening as Newcastle targetted the left side of our defence, and even Eriksen’s introduction couldn’t save us on Sunday.

VAR not on Tottenham’s side

Tottenham were poor overall but could have had a couple of penalties. Son and Kane were brought down in the box but the decision did not go our way, even with VAR checking the incidents.

We had close to 80% of the possession in the clash but just could not break Newcastle down regularly. There were chances of Son and Moura but they couldn’t grab them and we already trail leaders Liverpool by five points after three games.

Our next task won’t be any easier, with a trip to the Emirates, as we face the Gunners. Many fans were left unimpressed with the performance and vented their frustration on Twitter.
