Spurs transfer news: Fernandes claims a deal with Tottenham was done but Sporting blocked move

Bruno Fernandes was one of the hottest properties in the summer window and was linked with a move to the Premier League.

The Sun reports that Manchester United were interested in the 24-year-old and Tottenham were also keeping tabs on the Portuguese international.

Fernandes scored 32 goals and provided 18 assists for Sporting Lisbon last season, and Spurs landed Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis in the summer.

However, the midfielder claimed that a deal with Tottenham was almost done but Sporting backed out of the move.

Fernandes was speaking to GQ Portugal and added it is his goal to play in England (h/t Sun):

“As you all know, Tottenham made a lot of proposals for me. Everything was right with me – or practically should be.

“I never made any big demands, my manager was always dealing with the financials. It was and is my goal to play in England, Sporting you know that, everyone knows that, and there were conditions for things to be done.

“But Sporting understood that the value was not enough and I have to respect the decision.”

Sporting want big money for Fernandes

The 24-year-old is one of the most talented players coming through the Portuguese league and the report claims that Sporting wanted £60million for the midfielder.

Fernandes could have been a smart signing for Spurs but Lo Celso isn’t a bad option either. The Argentine still needs time to acclimatise to the team and country, and it will be interesting to see when he starts games under Mauricio Pochettino.

Spurs could still do with more attacking options in the final third and Fernandes can play in several positions in the attack.

The midfielder is still being linked with Real Madrid and Manchester United, according to the report, but he doesn’t have a lot of time to seal an exit with the transfer window shutting on 2 September.
