Latest Spurs news: Sherwood makes ‘free agent’ claim regarding Levy

Former Tottenham player and manager Tim Sherwood believes Spurs could lose three top players for nothing next season.

Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are all out of contracts at the end of the campaign, and the former Spurs star initially claimed that the defenders could move to China.

Alderweireld and Vertonghen are already in their 30s and spoke on Sky Sports’ The Debate (h/t Football.london):

“Alderweireld looks like he’s going to move and at 30, it’s probably the last time. Jan Vertonghen at 32, it’s probably the last time they’re going to fill the till up and it’s a short career.

“They need to do that, perhaps China, but Chinese clubs don’t take defenders very often. The last moves of their career, they’re probably waiting for that big one just to come.”

Sherwood then spoke about Sol Campbell’s departure from Spurs and how he joined Arsenal. The former manager added that Daniel Levy had vowed not to lose any player for free:

“I remember when I was at Tottenham and Sol Campbell left. Daniel Levy vowed he would never lose anyone on a free transfer again. Now they look like they’re going to lose three players at the end of the season.”

However, Sherwood hoped that the out-of-contract trio would sign new deals and claimed that losing them for nothing would be bad business.

Swapping one London club for another?

Sherwood then claimed that Alderweireld and Vertonghen could be great for Arsenal given the Gunners’ defensive frailties.

The Englishman claimed the Belgian pair have been the best in the Premier League over the past five years too.

Hopefully, Sherwood is right with one of his comments, that the trio of stars extend their deals with the club.

Replacing them would be tough given the quality they bring to the side, but they could still leave in the January window for a decent sum.
