Marseille snubbed Victor Wanyama deal thanks to France’s Joker transfer rule
RMC Sport (h/t Sun) claims that Marseille decided not to sign Tottenham’s Victor Wanyama despite Spurs offering the midfielder to the French club.
Wanyama had fallen down the pecking order after the arrival of Tanguy Ndombele and spent most of the previous two seasons injured.
The report claims that a loan move to Celtic couldn’t take place and Wanyama was a target for Club Brugge too.
The 28-year-old hasn’t featured for Spurs this season and Tottenham were willing to let Wanyama leave on a loan to Marseille before the deal would become permanent for £7million next season (h/t Sun).
However, the French giants landed Nantes’ Valentin Rongier one day after the transfer window close, thanks to France’s ‘Joker transfer rule’, according to the report.
The rule allows clubs from France to sign one French player after the transfer deadline.
Wage concerns too for Marseille
The report adds that Wanyama’s salary of £2.7m was also a problem for Marseille due to Financial Fair Play restrictions.
Wanyama faces a tough time at Spurs for the moment with Harry Winks, Eric Dier, Moussa Sissoko and Ndombele all fighting for a starting spot in the team.

It will be interesting to see if Wanyama forces his way into Mauricio Pochettino’s plans or leaves once the January window opens.
