Nicolo Zaniolo’s agent claims Tottenham had serious interest in AS Roma star
Claudio Vigorelli, Nicolo Zaniolo’s agent, claims Tottenham were interested in the AS Roma star this summer.
Spurs signed four players in the summer, with Giovani Lo Celso joining during the final days of the transfer window, however, Vigorelli claims Zaniolo was the original target for Tottenham.
The agent told the Daily Mail that Tottenham
“He renewed with Roma and is fine at Roma but obviously we enjoyed the great interest of Tottenham, who were the runners up in the Champions League.
“Their concrete interest in him shows how good the boy’s season was.
“Spurs thought a lot about Nicolo before taking Lo Celso, they focused their attention on him seriously, more than any other club even beyond the Premier League.”
Agent compares Zaniolo to an English legend
Vigorelli claimed that Zaniolo should do well under Roma coach Paulo Fonseca and compared the Italian to Paul Gascoigne:
“Zaniolo resembles Gascoigne very much for his physical qualities but he has a much milder character.
“Now Fonseca is playing him in central midfield, a position he likes, where he can render and become just like Gascoigne: devastating with his technique and quality.”
The 20-year-old can play in several attacking positions and it will be interesting to see how he performs for Roma this season.
The Italians aren’t in the Champions League this season while Spurs reached the final of the competition last time around. Zaniolo would have been a fantastic addition to the Tottenham side but Lo Celso isn’t a bad signing either.
The Argentine is yet to start for us after joining from Real Betis but has featured in several games from the bench.
