Gareth Southgate isn’t leaving England post till 2022 despite Tottenham links
England manager Gareth Southgate has been recently linked with the Tottenham job after some tough results for Mauricio Pochettino (h/t Sky Sports).
Spurs were hammered 7-2 by Bayern Munich in midweek and followed that up by a poor display in the 3-0 loss to Brighton on Saturday.
The loss would have heaped more pressure on Pochettino and Sky Sports adds that rumours of his future might not go away.
Southgate, however, isn’t thinking about leaving his England post and has set his sights on the 2022 World Cup. The England manager last took charge of a club in 2009, and is set to qualify for the 2020 Euros (h/t Sky Sports):
“Look, I’ve said in the summer, I’m not somebody that needs to hedge my bets and needs to play cleverly and say, ‘I’ll keep this door open, that door open’.
“I’m the England manager and it’s a massive privilege to do the job. There’s a lot of work to do here with the team.
“We think the team can continue to improve, and until I’m told otherwise, 2022 is my contract, and that’s it.”
Testing times for Pochettino
The performance against Brighton was possibly the worst of the campaign given that we barely threatened the opposition defence.
Against Bayern, we threatened their goal and could have been two or three goals up. We did capitulate in the second half in midweek, but Spurs should have done better against the Seagulls.
The international break provides our manager with more time to think about how we can get back on track. Our next clash is against a struggling Watford before we host Red Star in the Champions League group stage.
