Jan Vertonghen could have left Tottenham in the summer
Tottenham face a lot of questions regarding their transfer policy over the summer. Several players are free agents at the end of the campaign, while some wanted to leave before the start of the season.
Danny Rose and Christian Eriksen are two who have been highlighted in recent months. The English defender was left behind as we went for our Asia tour in hopes of finalising a move. However, Rose is still at the club and has featured regularly under Mauricio Pochettino.
Eriksen had spoken about taking up a new challenge after the Champions League final, and the Dane can leave on a free transfer at the end of this season. Guillem Balague wrote a lengthy piece on all the problems Pochettino has to deal with.
The Spanish expert touched upon the transfer issues and highlighted that Jan Vertonghen could have departed in the summer (h/t BBC):
“Those situations create confusion. It has been reported that Danny Rose, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen searched for – or had the chance of – a departure.”

There is still a problem for the Dane as neither Real Madrid nor Barcelona have “shown enough interest” to sign him.
Problems aplenty for Spurs
Vertonghen wasn’t selected for the opening games of the season as Davinson Sanchez was handed a start. Vertonghen was a part of the team that was hammered 7-2 by Bayern Munich, and it will be interesting to see how he does after the international break.
