Mauricio Pochettino calls Jean-Philippe Mateta in hopes of signing striker
Tottenham are interested in Jean-Philippe Mateta after a great first season at Mainz, according to Bild (h/t Sun).
The 22-year-old forward bagged 14 goals and two assists from 34 Bundesliga games last season and is a regular for the France U21 team.
The forward was at Lyon before making the switch to Mainz and Spurs face competition from Southampton for the highly-rated striker (h/t Sun).
Mateta would provide Spurs with another option off the bench, and the youngster is great in the air too. We need some cover for Harry Kane after letting Fernando Llorente and Vincent Janssen leave.
Although Troy Parrott could get some games, Spurs need to have someone with top-level experience.
Mateta won’t come on the cheap
The youngster could be a great addition to the side and Mainz are open to selling the 22-year-old in January. Tottenham would have to spend £26million to land the Frenchman and the youngster is willing to leave Germany (h/t Sun).

The England captain also needs to be rested from time to time and we cannot rely on Parrott alone. Tottenham could play someone else as the striker but we have limited options for that too.
