Carlo Cudicini stopped Clive Allen from punching Arsene Wenger
Former Tottenham coach Clive Allen was close to punching Arsene Wenger after Spurs beat Arsenal during his time at the club.
The former Spurs star shared a part of his autobiography on the Evening Standard and claimed the bad blood between the pair started in a 1-1 draw at Highbury in 2006.
Spurs had scored after two Arsenal players collided and Wenger was unhappy that the ball wasn’t put out of play. Thierry Henry scored the equaliser but Allen claimed that Wenger called Tottenham “cheats” after the game.
“As I went past Arsene, I looked him in the eye. ‘Don’t call me a cheat,’ I said. ‘I was sitting eight rows back in the dugout. I didn’t cheat.’
‘You are all cheats,’ Arsene said.”
The exchange took place in front of the other coaches of the two clubs and Allen vowed to shake Wenger’s hand as a winner of the derby.
Cudicini calms Allen down
Allen did get his chance to shake Wenger’s hand after
We won 2-1 at the Lane via goals from Rafael van der Vaart and Kyle Walker, and a heated exchange took place in the tunnel:
“I stuck out my hand to shake, but he just walked past me, because he’d lost. That’s the way he is. I chased after him down the tunnel.
‘Come on Arsene!’ I shouted. ‘Are you a man or a mouse? Shake my hand.’ He wouldn’t.”
The former Spurs star shared some choice of words to Wenger but our ex-keeper saved the day:
“Just as I went to swing for him, reserve goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini saved the day. He threw his arm over my shoulder.
“‘Clive, what was the score?’ he said, smiling. He dragged me away and into our dressing room.
It was probably a good thing that Cudicini was there to stop Allen from punching the lights out of Wenger.
