Tottenham see Barcelona’s Carles Alena as Christian Eriksen replacement
Tottenham will return in January for Barcelona’s rising star Carles Alena, according to Mundo Deportivo (h/t Daily Star).
The Spaniard broke into the first-team last season but has seen minutes hard to come by this time around.
Alena has only made one La Liga appearance under Ernesto Valverde this season, and the report claims that Spurs wanted to sign him on loan in the summer.
The report adds that Tottenham see Alena as a long-term replacement for Christian Eriksen. The Dane is out of a contract at the end of the season and can leave for free in the summer.
The 27-year-old can also speak with foreign clubs in the winter window ahead of a move at the end of the campaign. However, a move to Real Madrid might not take place.
Valverde’s form a problem for Eriksen
The Sun claims that a move to the Spanish capital is in danger due to Federico Valverde’s form for Real. The Uruguayan midfielder has impressed since returning from a loan spell at Deportivo La Coruna.
Valverde is seen as the successor to Croatian midfielder Luka Modric and Real might be tempted not to splash big on Eriksen and use the Uruguayan more (h/t Sun).
That would leave the Dane with a major dilemma on his hands. Eriksen had spoken about playing for Real ahead of this season.
