“Arsenal could do with him” – Former Tottenham striker believes Gunners could be interested in Spurs star

Darren Bent claims Arsenal could move for Jan Vertonghen

Jan Vertonghen hasn’t been at his best this season and the results speak for themselves. We were battered by Bayern Munich a few weeks ago and even lost away to Brighton. We fought hard to gain a point against Watford but looked better in the 5-0 win over Red Star Belgrade.

Vertonghen is already 32 and is a free agent at the end of the season. The Belgian has a ton of experience and replacing him would be difficult, however, Darren Bent believes Arsenal could be interested in the defender.

The former Tottenham striker was speaking to Football Insider and suggested there could be several parties linked with the Belgian (h/t Sun):

“Jan Vertonghen, playing at the centre of the defence, are there too many more that are going to be better than him? If you’re going to take him on a free, Arsenal could do with him.

“If he’s on a free don’t be surprised if they’re in the mix for him as well.”

Tottenham cannot allow Vertonghen to join a rival

Losing the Belgian on a free transfer would be a big loss to the side but him joining a rival would be a bigger blow. The 32-year-old still has a couple of quality years left in him and finding a replacement won’t be easy either.

Bent admitted that Spurs are in a tough situation given that Vertonghen can leave for free, and it will be interesting to see what we do with him in January. We could sell him for some money in the winter window, but that would reduce our options at the back.

Juan Foyth and Davinson Sanchez could step up, but they haven’t done all that well this season either.
