Tottenham enter race for RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano

Dayot Upamecano is one of the best young defenders in the Bundesliga and has featured 11 games for RB Leipzig this season.

The 21-year-old centre-back even featured for France’s U21 side during this summer’s Euros.

Arsenal were linked with Upamecano in the summer, however, Tottenham have also joined the race for the defender, according to Bleacher Report (h/t Football.london).

The report adds that Upamecano is out of a contract in 2021 and Leipzig fear losing their star on the cheap.

The French centre-back has had his injury problems at Leipzig over the years and only played 15 Bundesliga games in the previous campaign.

However, he has become a regular this season and Leipzig want £50million in the January window (h/t Football.london).

The Bundesliga side are willing to accept between £40m and £50m for the 21-year-old in the summer if contract talks don’t go well for them.

Tottenham in need of a new centre-back?

Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen are two of the most experienced defenders in the Premier League.

However, the pair can leave Tottenham for nothing in the summer. The pair also didn’t start in our 1-1 draw with Sheffield United.

Mauricio Pochettino opted for a centre-back pairing of Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez, and the pair did relatively well against the Blades.

Alderweireld was on the bench for the clash while Vertonghen missed out on the matchday squad.

Juan Foyth is another option for the centre-back position and we could do with a fresh face at the back.

Spurs spent big to land Sanchez from Ajax a few years ago, and it will be interesting to see what our plans are for that position.
