Boost for Tottenham as Simeone opens door for Lemar to leave Atletico
Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a boost in the pursuit of world cup winning winger Thomas Lemar from Atletico Madrid (h/t Mirror)
The 24-year-old had had a torrid 18 months since his move to the Spanish capital and has been unable to replicate his form at Monaco, much to Simeone’s chagrin.
“Lemar is an important player who hasn’t been able to develop his game but who has characteristics that others don’t have,”
The player is currently sidelined due to injury. Simeone has declined to guarantee Lemar’s future at the club once he has recovered.
“If Lemar can stay or not…we know that agents work in an exemplary way.
“Clubs work in terms of the needs of the clubs. But, as a footballer, every time he has been available, he’s played a lot more than he hasn’t played.
Lemar has made 58 appearances for the Spanish giants and has scored a paltry 4 goals. It is fair to say that the winger hasn’t lived up to the lofty expectations set by him. (h/t Whoscored)
Atletico seems to have lost patience with the 24-year-old and will look to cut their losses in the January window.
With Tottenham lacking numbers in attack, the Frenchman will add a quality option for Mourinho to choose from.
With Harry Kane injured and Erik Lamela just returning from a layoff, the addition of Lemar will ease the onus on Son Heung-Min and Lucas Moura to deliver in the attack.

North London rivals Arsenal are also in contention for the player. Atletico are looking to recoup the £50 million they paid for the player. It is unlikely that either club can afford the player on a permanent transfer this window.
