The talks between Spurs and the Irishman have been going well and the club is hopeful that the youngster will sign a long term deal when he turns 18 next month.

With Harry Kane injured, Spurs find themselves with no fit senior striker in the squad. With the likes of Son Heung-Min and Lucas Moura having to deputize upfront, Parrott may find himself called upon to step up and fill the English captain’s shoes.

Speaking on the prospect of the youngster replacing Harry Kane, manager Jose Mourinho was of the opinion that it is too soon to say so.

“I think he needs time. Having minutes and being involved is one thing. Another thing is what you call the direct replacement. To be that he needs to work.”

“Some minutes will arrive like it happened against Burnley, and step by step but [we are] not in a situation where we see Harry Kane is injured and Parrott is the man to resolve our problems.”

Mourinho has spoken against loaning out the young striker, claiming that he is better off at Spurs

“He’s 17 years old. I don’t think at the age of 17 it’s good for you to go on loan to a Championship club or to go abroad to another country. [It’s] one thing if you need that step when you are 19 or 20, another thing is when you are 17.

The Portuguese manager also spoke of his hope that the striker will sign a new contract and continue to develop at Tottenham

“The next step for him is to sign a new contract at the club long-term and then it is for everyone to decide what is best for is development. In this club we care about our players. It is also to find the best pathway to develop.

Parrott made his senior international debut for the Republic of reland on November 14th against New Zealand. He provided an assist for Ireland’s second as they ran out 2-1 winners.
