Spurs have identified the Portuguese midfielder to replace the injured Moussa Sissoko, who is expected to be out till April.
Tottenham have made an 18-month-loan offer for the player. It is believed that Spurs entered the race for the player after they were contacted by the player’s agent, Jorge Mendes. (h/t Guardian)
London rivals West Ham United and Chelsea are also interested in the player. West Ham were thought to be in pole position to secure Fernandes’s signature but Tottenham’s bid seems to have thrown a wrench in their works.
Both Chelsea and West Ham had made similar 18-month-loan offers for the player. Chelsea has an obligation to buy the player for £55m, provided the player features in at least half of the games during the loan spell.
West Ham’s obligation to buy amounts up to £33m and the percentage of games to trigger the clause would be less than Chelsea’s.
Benfica were thought to be more in favour of West Ham’s offer as they deem it to be more attainable.
