The 21-year-old will wear the number 30 shirt for the remainder of the season. Spurs reserve the right to make the deal permanent at the end of his loan spell.
Tottenham have beaten off interest from fellow London clubs West Ham United and Chelsea. A product of the Benfica youth academy, Fernandes was part of the Eagles squad that won the Premeira Liga last season.
The youngster has played 53 times for Benfica and scored 3 goals. He has impressed since making his debut last season and won the Primeira Liga’s Best Young Player of the Month for August.
The addition of the Portuguese midfielder will give Mourinho more options in midfield. The manager’s options were limited following the loss of Moussa Sissoko to a long term injury. With Tanguy Ndombele also injured and Christian Eriksen on his way out, the Spurs midfield was in dire need of reinforcement.
A skillful player, Fernandes could play a big role as we attempt for a top four finish. The midfielder has played over 50 times for Portgual across different age groups, with 2 caps coming at the senior level.
Spurs fans responded with joy at the capture of the talented midfielder and took to Twitter to express themselves.
