Paul Merson thinks Jose Mourinho regrets joining Tottenham Hotspur
Arsenal legend Paul Merson believes that Jose Mourinho regrets taking charge at Tottenham Hotspur. Merson also went on to add that the Portuguese manager has failed to improve Spurs, according to Daily Star (h/t The Sun).
Mourinho has won 10 of the 19 matches he has managed and has brought Spurs to within a touching distance of fourth. This doesn’t seem to be enough for Merson and he is far from convinced.
The pundit expressed his views in his column on the Daily Star (h/t The Sun). He likened Spurs’ condition to Mourinho’s stint at United while calling the Portuguese ‘grumpy’.
Mourinho’s appointment coincided with a revival in Tottenham’s form. Although there have been certain pitfalls, the manager has done well to bring the club within four points off a Champions League spot.
Merson has slammed Mourinho for failing to maintain the cheerful demeanour that he showed initially. He also went on to add that the Portuguese was brought in to take Spurs to the top four and not to win a trophy.
“Mourinho is only there to get them into the top four. I can’t see Daniel Levy wanting to win the FA Cup but not get back into the Champions League”
The pundit also went on to take the example of Jan Vertonghen. The veteran looked crestfallen when Mourinho took him off in the match against Southampton. Merson believes that the manager has learned nothing after doing the same with Eric Dier in the past.
Merson also compared the situation to the gloom and doom that befell Manchester United towards the end of Mourinho’s reign.
