Jose Mourinho jokes about 2018 title as Manchester City sanctions loom
Jose Mourinho has jokingly enquired if Manchester City’s sanctions will ensure the Portuguese winning the 2018 English Premier League. (h/t The Guardian)
The 57-year-old was the manager at Manchester United when they finished second to Pep Guardiola’s Centurions in 2017-18.
There was no love lost between UEFA and Manchester City on Valentine’s day as the governing body sanctioned the Sky Blues with a two-year ban for failing to overstate the sponsorship revenue in their accounts and in the break-even information submitted to UEFA between 2012 and 2016. It has since been reported that City could face further sanctions from the FA with them potentially being stripped of the 2013-14 English Premier League title. (h/t Daily Mail)
Speaking after the 3-2 win over Aston Villa, Mourinho quipped that he will be more interested if the 2017-18 title was overturned instead.
Mourinho’s United finished second,19 points behind City that season. The Portuguese has since maintained that he overachieved that season considering the constraints put on him. He popularly called it one of the greatest achievements of his career. (h/t ESPN)

Had such a situation been possible, it would have come as vindication for his troubled tenure at Old Trafford. He will become the first United manager since Sir Alex Ferguson to win the English Premier League.

Mourinho is a three-time winner of the competition. He won it thrice with Chelsea in two spells at the club. He took over as United manager in 2016 and immediately led the club to a double of the FA Cup and the UEFA Europa League.
Tottenham also stands to gain if City’s appeal is downturned by the Court for Arbitration of Sport. In such a case, a fifth-placed finish should be enough to ensure qualification.
