Here’s how close Tottenham came to signing Jack Grealish
Tottenham came away with the victory, but it does not do justice to how close Jack Grealish and Aston Villa actually played. Grealish has been a shining beacon of light in a struggling Villa side. He once again ran the rule at Villa Park much to Jan Vertonghen’s dismay.
Much was made of Spurs facing ‘the one that got away’ prior to the match. It is fair to say that Grealish made good of the assumption. The 23-year led from the front and provided the assist for Bjorn Engels to equalize early in the second half. (h/t Daily Mail)
The midfielder now has seven goals and six assists in 24 Premier League appearances. Not bad at all for a player in his first season in the top-flight. (h/t Whoscored)
The Sun (h/t Birmingham Mail) has now revealed that Tottenham could have signed the player for a mere £6million just 18 months ago. In fact, the report goes on to say that Spurs were just hours away from securing the deal.
Villa were in a financial mess under Tony Xia at the time. Daniel Levy, sensing the opportunity, tried to bring the price down to £4million, which ultimately got nowhere. Later, billionaires Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens then came to Villa’s rescue, ramping up Grealish’s asking price.
With more foresight, Spurs could have landed the midfielder, which at £6million is a massive bargain. The player has proved since that he is well worth the investment with Tottenham left to rue a lost opportunity.
