Tottenham Hotspur are said to have an advantage over Manchester United in pursuit of Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips.

Chris Brown tips Tottenham to sign Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips

Former Tottenham Hotspur player Chris Brown has tipped Tottenham Hotspur to sign Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips, according to an interview given to Football Insider.

Primarily playing in central and defensive midfield, Phillips has made 30 appearances in the Championship as Marcelo Bielsa’s side looks to gain promotion to the Premier League. The midfielder has so far scored one goal and assisted two more for Leeds.

Brown is under no illusions about the 24-year-old’s talents and expects him to make the step up to the Premiership next season. He also indicated that in the event of Leeds failing to gain promotion, the player could do so with Tottenham (h/t Football Insider).

Phillips is unlikely to come cheap, considering he signed a contract extension last year. It followed a hectic summer where Leeds had to turn down multiple offers for the midfielder, some as high as £27 million.

According to the report, the player’s new contract does have a release clause that can be triggered at the end of the season. Brown, who has also played for Leeds in his career, lavished praise on Phillips.

He hinted on there being certain options that could allow the player to leave if Leeds once again fall short of promotion.

“There’s still options in place if either or doesn’t happen” (on terms of promotion)

Brown went on to praise the development the player has shown under Bielsa. He also spoke of the player not being at Leeds next season if they aren’t in the English Premier League (h/t Football Insider).

“Phillips will not be with Leeds United next season if they don’t get promoted.”

He described the player as young with an ability to improve. However, he admits that the player’s asking fee could stand in the way of a transfer to North London (h/t Football Insider).
