Toby Alderweireld credits Jose Mourinho for Tottenham stay
According to Daily Mail, Jose Mourinho played a key role in convincing Toby Alderweireld in renewing his contract at Tottenham Hotspur.
The 30-year-old entered the final year of his previous contract last summer. The chances of him extending the deal looked remote under Mauricio Pochettino, as the player found himself out of favour on a number of occasions.
The Belgian formed a solid backline for Tottenham during Pochettino’s best days at the club and it will be a relief to Spurs fans to see him continue to do that in the near future. With the decreasing influence and impact of the ageing Jan Vertonghen, Alderweireld is the de-facto senior defender at the club.
Pochettino’s sacking was a blessing in disguise for the Belgian as the arrival of Mourinho opened more doors and opportunities. Alderweireld has praised the Portuguese tactician’s man-management and admitted the key role he played in the player’s decision.
He also expressed his marvel at Mourinho’s unique motivational skills and reiterated his desire not to disappoint the Spurs boss.
Alderweireld enjoyed playing under Mourinho and used the example of his son’s birth to hit home the point. The defender made a made rush across Europe following the happy event to be available for Tottenham’s match against Aston Villa in February.
“Jose Mourinho is someone who you want to travel eight hours by road to play on a Sunday after your son is born”
