Manchester United have set a £17m asking price for Chris Smalling
Chris Smalling is a target for Tottenham but Jose Mourinho’s side face competition from AS Roma, according to the Express (h/t Daily Star).
The 30-year-old defender left Manchester United to join AS Roma on loan at the start of the season. Smalling has put in some great performances for the Serie A giants and they lie fifth in the league.
Roma are keen on wrapping up a deal for their current star but Mourinho has been impressed by Smalling too (h/t Daily Star).
Smalling worked under the boss during his time at Manchester United, and the Red Devils want a decent sum for the Englishman.
Roma looking to wrap up the deal
The report claims that the Red Devils want £17m for the 30-year-old. However, Roma want to close the deal for £14m as they try to keep their finances in check (h/t Daily Star).
Tottenham have had their problems in the defence under Mourinho. Jan Vertonghen is also out of a contract at the end of the season, and it seems unlikely he will stay at the club beyond the campaign.
Smalling has a lot of Premier League experience and could come well under Mourinho. However, his age is a concern here.

The Englishman might have a few quality years left in him, and we could do with a younger centre-back as Toby Alderweireld is also in his 30s.
