Mourinho does not expect wholesale summer changes at Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has lifted the lid on Spurs’ summer transfer plans, according to The Express.
Mourinho has ruled out an overhaul of the squad and revealed that Spurs will focus on what they need to add to increase the squad strength and nothing more.
“There will not be massive changes”
He elaborated by saying that the squad does not need a complete overhaul before going on to add that it goes against the club’s principles to do so. Mourinho also went on to add that the market has become increasingly difficult and promised to do all they can to improve the squad.
“Year after year after year it’s more difficult, so I’m not thinking about an overhaul at the moment. But of course, we need to make our squad better.”
Tottenham haven’t been able to improve on last season’s finish and are now in real threat of missing out on the Champions League next season.
The club invested generously in the two transfer markets since the Champions League final against Liverpool. It has proven to be a fairly mixed bag so far. Club record signing Tanguy Ndombele has shown flashes of brilliance but just hasn’t been on the pitch enough to make a striking difference.
The same can be said for Ryan Sessegnon who has spent months out injured. Giovani Lo Celso has improved after a poor start and is now of Mourinho’s first names on the teamsheet. Having joined initially on loan, his contract was permanent in January for £27.2 million.
The club also signed the inspirational Steven Bergwijn while also bringing in Gedson Fernandes on a long term loan. Christian Eriksen has been the only big name to depart as Tottenham have brought in more than what they have sold.
A crucial area overlooked
In spite of having a net spend of more than £80 million since last season, it has been the lack of signing a replacement for Fernando Llorente that has proven to be a talking point.
The lanky striker left on a free and Tottenham failed to sign a replacement. This has come to bite us now as Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son’s injury has left us woefully short upfront.
